Information requested in respect of peripheral IV cannula

Please could you kindly advise which departments and healthcare professionals within your Trust use ultrasound to support the insertion of peripheral IV cannula?

The Anaesthetics, Oncology and Critical Care services, along with the Advanced Critical Care Practitioners as well as doctors and the Intra-Venous teams use ultrasound to support insertion of peripheral IV cannula.

The Vascular Access team, anaesthetics and ACCPs use ultrasound guidance (as per NICE guidelines) for PICCs/Mid-lines and difficult cannulas.

Imaging occasionally use ultrasound for insertion of cannulas for CT, MRI and some IR patients.  Imaging would use Midlines to inject if they were already inserted but would not insert themselves.

Oncology do use ultrasound (US) to support the insertion of peripheral cannula’s for patients with poor venous access, or those patients found to be difficult to cannulate without US.  This is performed by nursing staff.
