What is a Foundation Trust?

NHS Foundation Trusts were created to devolve decision-making from central Government to local organisations and communities so they are more responsive to the needs of local people.

Membership allows local people, patients and staff to have their say in the Trust’s future development. Members are responsible for electing a Council of Governors, who represent the local population and hold the Trust Board to account.

Public membership is open to residents and patients aged 16 years or more who reside in England and Wales.
