Good eggs: local community groups help spread Easter cheer at Medway Hospital

Date: 31 March 2016

Two local community groups paid a special visit to Medway Hospital over the Easter period to help raise patients’ spirits.
Hospital Radio Medway & Medway & West Kent Veterans’ Breakfast Club ensured patients did not miss out on Easter, with both groups kindly donating chocolate eggs and gifts to wards at Medway Hospital. The eggs were donated by local businesses and a local church.
Hospital Radio Medway, which is part of the Medway League of Friends and has been broadcasting at the Hospital since 1970, also took part in a whistle-stop tour of the hospital over the weekend, delivering gifts to patients away from home over Easter.
Eunice Norman from Medway League of Friends who coordinated Saturday’s visit said: “Like Christmas, Easter can be a tough time to be away from home – especially if you’re in hospital. We were delighted to help spread a bit of cheer on the wards with our younger and older patients. Everyone seemed really grateful for our efforts, which makes it all the more worthwhile.”
Easter also came early for children on Dolphin Ward, when they were visited by kind-hearted veterans from Medway & West Kent Veterans’ Breakfast Club. Mat Burdett, Les Wilson and Kevin Rourke gave up their time to deliver the chocolate, much to the delight of children and staff on Dolphin Ward.
Speaking at the visit, Kevin Rourke said: “The visit went really well. At our last meeting, we asked for Easter eggs to be donated for the purpose of this visit.
“It was great to meet so many wonderful young people during our visit to Dolphin Ward in what turned out to be an amazing day all round. We were also given a lovely tour of the ward, which gave us a good insight into how things run on a daily basis.”
Ann McKinnon, Play Nurse Specialist on Dolphin Ward said: “It was so generous and kind of the veterans and Hospital Radio Medway to deliver Easter Eggs to the children. Although they are poorly and in hospital, it’s important they don’t miss out on the Easter fun. It really lifted their spirits; there were happy faces all around.”
