League of Friends donates equipment to help support stroke rehabilitation

Date: 30 August 2016

The Acute Stroke Unit at Medway Maritime Hospital has received a generous donation of six specialist wheelchairs from Medway League of Friends.

Patients rehabilitating from a stroke often require physiotherapy, as they may have weakness or paralysis on one side of their body, or have problems with moving and carrying out their everyday activities.

Victoria Watson, Senior Sister on Harvey Ward (Acute Stroke Unit), said:
“Rehabilitation after a stroke is paramount in supporting patients’ bodies to heal and recover movement. We had some rather outdated specialist wheelchairs on the ward, most of which were in need of repair. Unfortunately, some of the parts are now obsolete due to the age of the wheelchairs.”

“The League of Friends kindly agreed to replace the wheelchairs the unit so desperately needed. We’re absolutely delighted for this generous donation.”

Eunice Norman from Medway League of Friends said: “We’re only too pleased to provide funds to purchase essential equipment to aid the recovery of patients. This is only made possible through the continued support of patients, visitors and staff who purchase items from our shops.”
