Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment can improve the appearance, position and function of crooked or abnormally arranged teeth. Our orthodontic service sees patients with severe and complex needs, usually involving more than one dental specialty. Conditions such as severe facial disproportion, cleft lip and palate, sleep apnoea (sleep disordered breathing), developmentally missing teeth and severely crowded and unerupted teeth are treated.

Our team of orthodontists are responsible for investigating and assessing the complexity of treatment required following referral. Patients who fall into a high category of treatment need (known as IOTN 4 and 5) are eligible for treatment.

Orthognathic and Maxillofacial Surgery

Patients who require orthognathic (jaw) surgery are treated in combined clinics held in the department by orthodontic consultants and the oral and maxillofacial surgery consultant. The pre-surgical orthodontic treatment is carried out by the orthodontic team at Medway, with surgery subsequently carried out by the maxillofacial team at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.

Cleft lip and Palate

Orthodontic treatment for children and adults with cleft lip and palate in Medway is carried out in the orthodontic department following referral. We are members of the South Thames Cleft Team and host twice monthly outpatient multi-disciplinary clinics in the Magpie Centre onsite.
