Orthopaedics and trauma

Orthopaedics and trauma is an area of surgery concerned with injuries and conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves). People of all ages are treated by this service.

Our orthopaedic and trauma service treats injuries and conditions such as a bone fracture, a deformity of the spine or limbs, or a long-term condition that's developed over many years, such as osteoarthritis.

To ensure patient care is tailored and specific, we have a consultant dedicated to the care of the elderly.

The majority of orthopaedic and fracture clinics are held in a modern purpose built area in the outpatient department. Patients are seen in the fracture clinics in the shortest possible time after their attendance in accident and emergency. The plaster room and orthotics unit are contained within this area.

Virtual Fracture Clinic (VFC)

The Virtual Fracture Clinic (VFC) was introduced at Medway in April 2018. It is collaboration between the Minor Injury Unit (MIU)/Emergency Department at Medway Maritime Hospital including the MIUs at Sittingbourne Memorial Hospital, Sheppy Community Hospital and Gravesham Community Hospital. Primary Health Care Providers can also refer into the VFC. Click here to find out more
